#Money
The conversation Anabelle and I had around the cost of an overseas education really stuck a nerve among many people.
We’ve received an overwhelming amount of comments but this one stood out because it was an extreme example of what can happen if the household savings are deployed elsewhere.
Have a look at the attached screenshot.
Its come from a retired banker (identity withheld of course).
Instead of spending the saved amount of RM500k on an MBA in Melbourne in 2022 (totally not worth the money in my opinion) because his Australia visa was denied, his son instead asked to invest that money in three US tech stocks, to which his father agreed.
So I did some rough sums, and assuming his son invested equal amounts of that RM500k into the three stocks as named — NVIDIA, Apple and Palantir Technologies — he would have roughly 5xd his money in the four years since, because he would have benefited from the huge rally in AI and tech stocks.
That equates to around RM2.5 million.
More than enough to give the boy a ton of options: a portion as startup capital for a business, another portion to lock up in a few index funds for the next 30 years at say 15% annual returns (S&P 500), another portion locked up in EPF Malaysia and perhaps another portion to help family members with house repairs, down payment for a property, car etc.
The flipside?
RM500k spent on a paper qualification that employers may not hold in as high a regard as in the past and may even be rendered superfluous when (not if) Artificial Super-Intelligence lands in the job market.
Decisions, decisions. Thank Gawd its Friday!
Carpe Diem all.
