Happy Fact: Malaysia has a good pension system.
Unhappy Fact: Most Malaysians won’t have a good retirement.
The gap is 4.9 million people. That’s how many active EPF Malaysia members aged 18 to 60 are behind EPF’s own basic target of RM390,000 by age 60.
One in seven Malaysians. And that’s only the ones with a pay slip.
What struck me in the data was this: on the Mercer CFA Institute Global Pension Index, we score a respectable 77.5 on integrity. That means the fund is well-run.
But on the more important issue of retirement-fund adequacy, we rank 43rd of 52. Behind Vietnam. Behind China and Brazil.
Widen the lens to everything a typical Malaysian household owns, from home and savings to shares and EPF, minus debts, and the number gets starker.
The Malaysian adult in the middle holds about US$8,500 versus the average of US$29,300. That’s not a lot of money to get old on.
On Thursday, Budget 2027 will formally reassess whether retirement protection is adequate. I won’t guess what it announces. Tiered dividends are being debated, and the trade-offs are real — i.e. the wealthier won’t stick around in the fund if the lower tiers get a higher return.
But after three decades of covering financial markets and talking to really successful people, here’s the uncomfortable truth: No budget, fund or adviser knows your number. You do. Or you should.
I learnt early because I saw how The Other Half do it.
They invested. Early. And they had a fiscal discipline most learn too late.
Oh yeah. And the classic Millionaire Next Door mentality: armed with a thick skin, they don’t give a toss what you or their neighbours think — they will drive the crappy old car and ignore designer brands cos they know those things are classic money pits.
Note to the ambitious: learn how investing works. Understand the asset classes. Watch the fees. Start small, and start early. At an assumed 5% a year, RM200 a month from age 30 builds roughly double what the same habit builds from 40. Investing is a time game, and the clock doesn’t negotiate.
(NB: I’m no Jeff Bezos either — I’m also still learning and building — a lifelong process. #sameboat)
Happy Tuesdays all.
Carpe Diem
