You’ve Got One Life: Make the Pitch
You’re gonna die one day. Harsh? Maybe. But that’s the line from a Matthew McConaughey video that stopped me in my tracks — him standing on the mound at Yankee Stadium, terrified of bouncing the first pitch in front of 100,000 people, and deciding to just go for it anyway. Because what’s there to lose?
In this monologue, I talk about why that story hit home — turning 55 this year, watching friends and relatives go unexpectedly, and realising most of us live like we’ve got infinite time.
I get into two ideas that have shaped how I think about this stage of life:
→ The “youth of your senior years” — the window (roughly 45–60) when you’ve still got the strength, the sharpness, and the drive to actually go do the thing, whether that’s climbing a mountain, starting a business, or finally spending real time with your kids.
→ The “marginal decade” — longevity expert Peter Attia’s term for the stretch after that, when decline can turn sharp fast.
Along the way: a former hotel CEO who never got around to writing his musical score, a doctor friend with the five-star lifestyle and zero time for his teenage son, and why retirement was never really about stopping work — it’s about finally doing work that fulfils you.
