Navigating Malaysia’s socio-political landscape as a minority youth is often reduced to stereotypes, sensationalized headlines, and communal rhetoric. Yet, when you look past mainstream political theater and speak directly to young Malaysians on the ground, a very different reality emerges—one defined by deep political apathy toward traditional race-based parties, everyday economic pragmatism, and an unshakeable sense of belonging to the country.
In this episode of Do More, Sharvin sit down with Shalini and Liang Hong, researchers at Iman Research, to dissect the findings of their extensive qualitative fieldwork—”Indian Roots” and “Chinese Shoots”—which surveyed over 100 Indian and Chinese youths across Peninsular Malaysia to understand how they truly feel about nation-building, discrimination, and their future in Malaysia.
Shalini sheds light on the unspoken struggles of Indian youths, from persistent rental and job discrimination in the Klang Valley to the destructive “third spaces” that absorb primary school dropouts. She breaks down why young Indians are actively rejecting traditional race-based political representation in favor of inclusive, anti-corruption narratives—even looking outward to figures like Tamil Nadu’s Vijay for inspiration—and traces how historical colonial displacement continues to fuel intergenerational urban poverty today.
Liang Hong challenges conventional assumptions about Malaysian Chinese communities, revealing why sensationalized issues like UEC recognition fail to resonate with the vast majority of Chinese youths studying in national schools. He explores the pragmatism driving education and career choices, how minorities-within-minorities assimilate to thrive in the East Coast, and why Malaysian laborers in Singapore (“Ma-Lao”) aren’t looking to migrate permanently—but rather aspire for a stronger Ringgit so they can build a comfortable life back home.
