He has so much potential.
Latent energy. Bubbling below the surface.
I have always felt his intelligence. He has this ability to see past corners. To reach conclusions many cannot attain, even though he is unable yet to explain why.
This is the malaise of any 16-year-old. It’s fine.
But like so many of his generation, his intelligence has been taken hostage.
He stares into a rectangle of glass, believing it to be reality. His fingers flick up. Or sideways, depending on which reality he thinks he is witnessing.
He has been captured.
Held hostage by an army of coders and software developers so many more times cleverer than any child.
Them and their unending games and their short videos and the way they just enrapture the human condition in a way that no-one except the most capable armies can.
It is powerful. No matter the reprisal. No matter the ferocity. It is like a virus without a cure.
It. Keeps. Returning.
We fear the future. A future where 99% of the population is comprised of adults who are unable to hold a conversation. Whose attention spans span 45 seconds, tops.
And who have never felt the pangs of hunger or the anxieties of paucity.
Only Screens.
And Heaven help the sick person on that cold steel table where the knife is held by a physician who has spent most of his formative life playing Brawl Stars.
And is single. Childless. Friendless.
And most likely still living at home.
We are spawning an entire generation of Zombies.
Does anyone care?
Anyone?
